Let's admit we have a big-time crush on Blake Lively: The mother-of-two is effortlessly stunning (postpartum or post-gym), she has a killer career, a swoon-worthy family dynamic, and on top of it all she manages to maintain her girl next door personality. But when she took to Instagram to share her 61-pound post-baby weight loss we were feeling a mix of emotions. We can appreciate good health, hard work, and dedication—but we also felt a twinge of jealousy. We can't all bounce back from a pregnancy like Blake Lively. But it's important to remember: The pressure to get back to one's pre-baby body is high for anyone, but even more intense in Hollywood.
“Turns out you can’t lose the 61 lbs you gained during pregnancy by just scrolling through instragram and wondering why you don’t look like all the bikini models,” Blake wrote.
Preach, Blake! We all know it takes hard work to lose baby weight, but it's not often that we get to hear a celebrity openly admit what it really takes to meet these physical expectations. There's often an illusion that they wake up with a camera-ready six-pack. But we can all relate to comparing ourselves to others on social media—it’s exhausting, and a blow to our confidence.
She continued, “Thanks @donsaladino for kickin my A double S into shape. 10 months to gain, 14 months to lose. Feeling very proud”
The mother-of-two should feel proud—14 months is a realistic, and still impressive, amount of time to shed the baby weight.
Yet, we still need to be aware of the privilege Blake has. She's very open about working with her personal trainer Don Saladino, and it’s amazing to learn and be motivated by the best, but according to livestrong.com celebrity trainers can put you out $15,000 for a six-week workout program. Although we couldn’t confirm how much it cost to train with Don himself, we can imagine he is worth a pretty penny. After her first child, James, she trained with Don to shed her baby weight for her surf movie, The Shallows.
We also can’t forget about the cost of personal chefs, nutritionists, housekeepers, child care, and all the other factors that could possibly go into the making of a celebrity's rockin’ bod. All in all, her experience is not a fair representation of today’s mom.
So let's show Blake our support for her positivity and success, but don’t beat yourself up if this doesn't look like your comeback story. Blake isn’t claiming to represent a non-celebrity mom, so she isn’t in the wrong to share her achievement, but it's still important to realize progress takes time. Don't be too hard on yourself by comparing your situation to anyone else's—that's the real takeaway here.
Congratulations to Blake for feeling good, looking incredible, and sharing HER story.
